Continuing to explore Valdez, AK.
KCHU, one of four radio station in Valdez, with a rather short radio mast |
You can see why he is an orthodontist and not a dentist! |
The view of the city from Overlook Trail |
The view towards the harbor from Overlook Trail |
Looking back at the overlook, which is the mound halfway
between the pond and the taller mountain |
Ruth Pond, which is stocked for fishing,
reflects the elementary school (KSS) |
Our Valdez Museum ticket also gave us admission to the Remembering Old Valdez Annex. This museum concentrated on the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake and its effects on the city.
A group painstakingly recreated every building in the original Valdez
and the scale model sections are protected in eleven
glass-topped cases, spaced so that you can take a closer look |
An example of one section (scale model made in 1997) |
We had lunch at the Alaska Halibut House; since we have had
plenty of halibut (and it is expensive!), we tried fried
rockfish and fried clams; all very meaty! |
Valdez Small Boat Harbor |
A Range Rover?! |
Thai restaurants can be found everywhere in Alaska |
A couple fishing boats at the fish processing company dock |
Yet another espresso shack, this one has a customer
with a bike and baby trailer (and a dog)! |
We left Valdez on Richardson Highway.
Duck Flats, intertidal wetlands |
A detour west on Airport Road, four miles to Glacier View Park.
A couple from Switzerland is prepared for anything, and they
put a kayak into the glacial lake to go see Valdez Glacier |
We could not see Valdez Glacier that has retreated through that v-valley |
We did get to see little icebergs... |
Kent was going to retrieve this "plastic bottle" from the water |
It was a mini-iceberg - at least 90% of it was underwater! |
We passed the community shooting range |
A Mancamp (a hotel in a former oil workers camp?), meals included (KSS) |
Back to Richardson Highway, then another detour, this time to the east on Dayville Road, about 4 miles to the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery.
We are now across the water from the city of Valdez |
Sea lions (KSS) |
The fishladder to the hatchery was closed,
and these salmon were trying to get in |
Meanwhile, the sea lions took their time going in to grab fish (KSS) |
Oil refinery in Valdez |
Valdez is also known as the namesake of the Exxon Valdez, the oil tanker that was responsible for the devastating oil spill at the mouth of Valdez Arm of Prince William Sound. The Valdez museums had some information about the spill and its effects.
Back to Richardson Highway/AK-4, heading to the B&B.
The Lowe River seems to be running high |
Tonight, a young couple on their honeymoon had one of the rooms in the B&B.
